C. Learning Support Attempts
Once a student places into a LS course, the student must exit within a certain number of attempts by earning a passing grade in the course along with a passing COMPASS Exit Test score (unless otherwise stated in the course syllabus). An attempt is defined as any semester in which a student earns any grade other than W (i.e., A, B, C, IP, F, WF, or U). Students taking MATH 0097 must earn a passing grade of A, B, or C in order to move on to MATH 0099, but they do not take the COMPASS Exit Test. Students taking MLCS 0099, the alternative LS math class that prepares students for MATH 1001 or 1101 (but not MATH 1111), do not have a COMPASS Exit Test requirement. For ENGL 0099 and READ 0099, the term count allowed is two attempts (two semesters) within which to fulfill the LS requirement. For MATH 0097, the term count allowed is also two attempts. The overall term count allowed for LS MATH is three, meaning that students have three semesters within which to pass both MATH 0097 and MATH 0099 or to pass MLCS 0099. Students who do not pass their LS courses within the number of allowed attempts are suspended from all University System of Georgia institutions for three consecutive semesters, including summer. Attempts are recorded on the Tranguid in the Term Count row under Learning Support.
Despite placing into the upper level LS math by COMPASS test scores, some students voluntarily choose to drop back from the upper level LS math class (MATH 0099), to the lower level LS math class (MATH 0097). It is important to note that students with MATH 0099 requirements who drop back to MATH 0097 are held to the same rules as students with MATH 0097 requirements.
